A Winter Family Adventure in Rocky Mountain National Park

Family at Sprague Lake in RMNP

We were looking for something that our extended family could do together outside and came up with the idea to head to RMNP for the day.  Because there are kids ranging from 6 to 18 years old, we wanted to find a relatively flat hike so the little kids could keep up.  Planning the hike was easy with RockyMountainNationalPark.com!  I just looked on their Favorite Family Trails page, and determined that Sprague Lake was a good option for these reasons:

  • Easy Access: We could drive right to a parking lot and start walking
  • Beautiful Views: A stunning lake with dramatic mountain peaks in the background makes for postcard worthy views
  • Very little elevation gain: only 10 feet
  • Total trail length of 1 mile: perfect for doing with small children

One of the greatest aspects of the walk around Sprague Lake was that because of all the recent freezing temperatures, the lake was frozen solid.  As soon as we got on the trail I saw a family out on the ice, and it wasn't long before we joined them!  Before long a contest of who could slide the furthest developed and everyone had a lot of fun practicing their best penguin impersonations.

Sliding on Ice

After our walk, we headed into the town of Estes Park to warm up with hot cocoa and coffee at a Locals' favorite spot, Kind Coffee.  It was such a great day!
