Rocky Mountain National Park borders Estes Park on the west. The
north entrance to the park is on Fall River Road (US34). Moraine
Avenue (US36) leads to the south entrance.
Roosevelt National Forest borders Estes on the east. US 34 follows
the Big Thompson River from Loveland to Estes. US36 brings travelers
from Boulder and Lyons to Estes. Colorado Highway 7, part of the
Peak-to-Peak National Scenic Byway, enters Estes from the south.
The National Park is open all year, 24 hours/day but the section of
Trail Ridge Road that crosses the Continental Divide is closed in
the winter. It opens each year in May by Memorial Day weekend and
stays open until October brings a really big snowstorm.
Fall River Road was the original road over the Divide. The section
in the Park now known as Old Fall River Road starts at Endovalley
and is a one-way, east to west, unpaved road that opens each year
for the 4th of July and closes in September or October. The section
of Fall River Road west of Estes and into the Park is paved and open
year-round.
