Summer is gone and the trails are covered with snow. This will be the case for at least the next seven months, but don't put away those hiking boots or your daypack. With the addition of winter clothing, a pair of snowshoes and a set of poles, Rocky Mountain National Park is there to enjoy through the winter season.

Years ago snowshoes were thought of as merely winter transportation but no more- times have changed. With the advent of smaller, lighter snowshoes, this is one of the fastest growing sports in America.

The benefits include no expensive lessons or lift tickets (except for a steep sidehill, snowshoeing requires walking with an expanded stance-something most people can accomplish without much practice). There are no lift lines and on most winter weekdays you may have the trails to yourself. Then of course there is winter itself. It's beautiful!

How do you get started? Easy. Go to a snowshoe rental shop in town and rent a pair. It will cost you about $10 a day. Head for the Bear Lake area and do some of the short lake hikes. Be well prepared for the cold and remember that for most people, a short, easy summer hike (Emerald lake) is a moderate snowshoe hike. Once you are ready to venture further, check with RMNP for trail information.
