Rocky Mountain National Park updates: What you need to know!

Want to know the latest updates on Rocky Mountain National Park? From info on required Timed Entry Reservations to the latest RMNP Openings, we’ve got you covered.

Timed Entry Reservations Updates

Just as in the past 5 years, Rocky Mountain National Park will require timed entry reservations to visit the park during peak season. They are required May 23rd – October 19th, 2025.

  • Reservations are $2 per vehicle.
  • They must be purchased on the Recreation.gov website or on the mobile app.
  • They are not available in person at either visitors centers or at the entrances to the park.
  • We recommend purchasing your permit(s) ahead of time since they do sell out. You can do that on the 1st of each month beginning at 8:00 am MDT for the following month. Additional permits are released each night starting at 7:00 pm MDT for the following day.

RMNP Updated Openings

Moriane Park Campground

The Moraine Park Campground is scheduled to open later this summer after two years of construction updates! Exact dates of the opening have not been announced yet. Please check the Park Website for more info if you’re interested in camping.

Fall River entrance

The Fall River entrance along highway 34 is now open! There is a beautiful new entrance station with multiple lanes for incoming park traffic. There is also a special “fast pass” lane on the far right side with a transponder system for visitors who have annual or lifetime passes. Transponders are available for purchase at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center on Sundays. They enable quicker entry into the park for frequent visitors.

Automated Fee Machines

New automated fee machines have been installed to help streamline the visitor experience. They are located at the Lumpy Ridge Trailhead, Lily Lake, Wild Basin, and the Fall River entrance. Another one will be opening at the Beaver Meadows entrance soon. These machines allow visitors to purchase park passes in areas without official entrance stations, or when staff is off duty.

Seasonal Park Roads

Trail Ridge Road typically opens sometime around the end of May. It depends on how much snow the road crews have to clear. They’ve started the process of snow removal already, and looks to be on track for a “normal” opening date. In 2024, Trail Ridge Road opened on May 31st.

Old Fall River Road usually opens at the beginning of July, and we expect that to be the case in 2025 as well.

Visitation to the Parks at an all-time High!

As reported by the NPS Social Science Program, the park system broke it’s all-time record for visitors in 2024 with nearly 332 million! People from all over the world come to enjoy the great treasures which make up the National Park system. Unfortunately, this continued uptick in visitation comes at a time when the federal government is cutting back on permanent and seasonal employees across the NPS.

As we previously reported, you are still encouraged to come and enjoy all that the parks have to offer. But, you may need to be a little more patient and a little more courteous as the remaining staff adjust to the new paradigm, and continue to work hard making your visit enjoyable.

See our recent blog for more details on what to expect and what you can do to help!
