The peak time for “autumn gold” viewing in Estes Park this year will be the September 15-22, 2024.
Trail Ridge Road is an epic spot in RMNP for “leaf peepers”
If you love to take a drive on a beautiful fall day, you might want to drive Trail Ridge Road. Driving on this 48 mile stretch through Rocky Mountain National Park is an experience not to be missed! Trail Ridge Road boasts that it is the highest continuously paved road in the country, connecting the towns of Estes Park and Grand Lake, Colorado.
Of course, since Trail Ridge Road is at such a high elevation (12,183 feet at its highest point), you will need to check with the NPS to make sure it hasn’t closed due to an early snow. The easiest way to get accurate and up-to-date info on the status of Trail Ridge Road is to call 970-586-1222. On average, the park will close the road sometime around mid to late October.

If hiking is more your speed, take in the gorgeous autumn nature on one of these trails in RMNP:
- Gem Lake via Lumpy Ridge Trailhead – 4.6 miles point to point, intermediate rating. Known for great views of the Estes valley and iconic Longs Peak, this trail will take you through golden aspen groves and rugged rock outcroppings. Note there are lots of boulders for kids to climb on along the route.
- Bierstadt Lake via Bear Lake Trailhead – 4.4 miles out and back, moderate rating with switchbacks. Known for sweeping views of the continental divide and beautiful forested areas.
- The Pool via Fern Lake Trailhead – 3.4 miles out and back, moderate rating. Known for river views of the Big Thompson river that meanders through aspen groves and meadows.
